“Art is not what you see, it is what you make others see” -Edgar Degas
I work primarily in collage, and paint, compiling different images together to create a story. A lot of my stories are based on past experiences concerning my feelings and awareness towards destruction of humanity and society. By covering and exposing different parts of the paintings involving texture and depth, I try to create a story line that is beautiful yet profound.
I am interested in how art can talk about the relationships between these large ideas; the earth, environments, time, space and society. My subjects range from everyday landscapes and people to abstracted imagery because I enjoy everyday items and nature. I think awareness of these things is a lost art, many no longer appreciate the everyday and forget how fortunate we all are to be around these sceneries or this lifestyle. The people I paint depict the way society treats individuals in western culture, in particular, objectification and inequality are often an issue. To illustrate this idea, I create aesthetic illusions with hidden meaning, because being beautiful does not always mean a person is shallow. Looks are deceiving. Many people talk to women like they are unable to understand on an intellectual level, those people are wrong. If everyone was treated equally, they would have a better understanding of other, of me, of who I am as an artist. So, if a person views my paintings, looks through the aesthetic pleasure and digs deeper to find these hidden meanings, it will mean that there is a chance people are not so ignorant and I perhaps have opened their eyes.
Ultimately my work is a part of me, my thoughts, my emotions, my reasonings and it is meant to express how I feel about these environmental and social issues in this world. If I can help the viewer see my point of view and have them feel what I feel, I have succeeded as an artist
